5 Lessons to Teach Your Child While They’re Young

Raising a child is an adventure. You spend countless hours telling your child to do this and don’t do that, all in hopes of one day seeing your tireless efforts come to fruition. But even the best parents start to doubt themselves sometimes and wonder whether they’re teaching their children the right things. With that said, here are 5 things to teach your children while they’re still young.

1. Ask Questions

We know you’ve probably been bombarded by questions from your child. From “Why is the sky blue?” to “Where are the dinosaurs?”, it’s almost amazing how many different questions a child can have. But remind your child to keep asking questions, especially as they get older. Teach your child that curiosity is a good thing. Not only does it lead to a more exciting life, but a curious child is exposed to a range of psychological benefits. Research has shown that curious people tend to have more positive emotions and lower levels of anxiety.

2. It’s Okay to Make Mistakes

Teach your child that they don’t have to be right 100% of the time—no one is. Making mistakes is just as much a part of the learning process as the achievements. More importantly, help your child reflect on their mistakes. What went wrong? What did they learn from the mistake? What could they change for next time? With the right mindset, your child will grow from their mistakes and become even more determined to improve.

3. The World Isn’t Perfect

While this one may seem obvious, it can be hard to tell your child that the world they were born into is filled with problems. But don’t hide the world’s issues from your child—they’ll figure it out eventually, and it might not be in the way you imagined. Sit down and talk with them about the things they might encounter as they grow up, and make sure they’re comfortable while doing so. Answer any questions they may have, but also remind them that these problems aren’t impossible to solve. There are solutions and we just have to find them!

4. Be Confident, but Humble

It’s important for your child to trust in themself and their actions. Teach your child to have confidence from an early stage—they’ll gain a sense of courage and make the most of opportunities in the future. Encourage your child to try new things and commend them when they put in the effort. At the same time, teach your child to acknowledge their flaws. No one is perfect, and that's perfectly fine!

5. It’s Okay to Ask for Help

Teach your child that asking for help is perfectly acceptable! No one will look down on them if they are unsure about something and request assistance. There are things that your child simply won’t know or won’t be able to solve alone, and being able to ask for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Additionally, remind your child that most people are perfectly willing to lend them a hand!

While each parent will take a different approach to teach their child, these are just several lessons we believe are essential for every child to understand from a young age. Raising a child is difficult, but it’s a rewarding process—as fellow parents, we understand this well. Know that you have our support and good luck!
